The geography curriculum at Lily Lane stimulates the children’s interest and understanding about the world around them.

In order the develop the skills necessary to become geographers, such as substantive and disciplinary skills, our well-developed curriculum stimulates children’s curiosity and inspiration. We aim for a skills based geography curriculum, following the National Curriculum, which encourages children’s interest and fascination about where they live and what makes up the wider world. We want our children to enjoy and love learning about geography, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also with the use of education visits to enrich their learning.

At Lily Lane our Geography is taught in blocks of approximately 6 weeks, alternating per half term. the geography curriculum centers around our key substantive concepts called “golden threads”. These golden threads interweave the learning that we do in each subject and link across both History and Geography to embed learning. Each golden thread is revisited throughout EYFS, KS1 and KS2. This allows children to build better connections between the subjects, which increases the likelihood of children remembering units taught throughout school.

By choosing to present our curriculum in this manner we believe that this allows children to embed their learning and deepen their understanding of the National Curriculum. Using bridging back retrieval practices in every lesson builds cognitive retrieval skills by recalling information taught in previous units and previous years. Lily Lane uses ‘sticky knowledge’ to make it clear what knowledge should be taught in each lesson and what we expect 100% of children to learn and remember. All sticky knowledge and subject specific vocabulary is clearly displayed in knowledge organisers. By using these methods we believe we are developing well rounded children who can ‘learn and succeed together’.
